Getting a pool renovated is a significant investment. New plaster, fresh equipment, clean surfaces — everything looks the way it should. What happens in the weeks and months after the renovation is over determines how long that investment actually holds up.
This is the part nobody warns pool owners about clearly enough. A newly plastered or resurfaced pool is not the same as a pool that’s been running for two years. The curing process is active. The chemistry behaves differently. There are things you can do in the first 30 days that protect the surface for the next decade, and there are things you can do — or fail to do — that damage a new finish permanently within that same window.
Here’s exactly what post-renovation pool maintenance looks like, from the day the pool is filled through the long-term care that keeps everything in good condition for years to come.
New plaster — whether standard white plaster, quartz aggregate, or pebble finish — starts curing the moment it’s mixed. By the time your pool is filled and the equipment is running, the curing process is well underway. About 60% of the total curing process happens in the first 28 days. The plaster doesn’t reach its full hardness, durability, and stain resistance until somewhere between 8 and 12 months after installation.
During curing, the plaster releases calcium hydroxide — what most people call plaster dust — into the water. This is completely normal and expected. It’s a byproduct of the cement hydration process. The problem is that calcium hydroxide also drives the pH and alkalinity up rapidly, and if those aren’t kept in check, scaling forms on the new surface. Scaling makes fresh plaster rough, discolored, and can permanently compromise the finish.
At the same time, water that’s too acidic attacks new plaster by leaching calcium hydroxide out of the surface, which etches and weakens it. This is why the chemistry in the first 30 days requires more attention than at any other point in the pool’s life. The new finish is soft. The chemistry is unstable. Getting it right during this window is what determines whether the renovation holds up the way it should.
Once the plaster is applied, the pool should be filled as continuously and as quickly as possible. Don’t stop filling partway through. A partial fill that sits at a fixed level while the rest of the pool dries will leave a permanent ring line at that water level that is very difficult to remove. Use multiple hoses if available to speed up the fill. Don’t allow the hose stream to spray directly onto fresh plaster — a soft cloth or rag tied over the hose end diffuses the water flow and prevents direct impact on the uncured surface.
Test the source water chemistry before you start filling, not after. Your tap water’s calcium hardness, alkalinity, and pH all affect how the plaster cures. Knowing what you’re starting with lets you make adjustments as the pool fills rather than reacting to problems after the fact.
Once the pool is full, start the filtration system and run it continuously — 24 hours a day — for a minimum of 72 hours. The longer it runs during this initial period, the better. Clean the filter before startup so it’s working at full capacity.
Do not add chlorine for the first 48 hours after filling. Do not turn on the heater until all plaster dust has been fully removed from the pool — plaster dust can find its way into the smaller tubes of a heater and clog them. Do not run any automated or robotic cleaning systems during the first 30 days. Do not add salt to saltwater pools or turn on the salt chlorine generator for the first 30 days.
Add a sequestering agent at startup. Metals in the source water can cause stubborn stains on a new plaster surface if they’re not bound and kept in solution. A sequestering agent is inexpensive insurance against metal staining at the most vulnerable stage of the plaster’s life.
Brush the entire pool surface — walls, floor, and steps — at least twice a day for the first two weeks. This is not optional. Brushing removes plaster dust from the surface before it can scale and harden. It also opens the pores of the fresh plaster to allow proper curing. Use a nylon-bristle brush during the startup period — wire brushes are too aggressive for uncured plaster and will scratch the new surface.
When you brush, the water will likely cloud up. That’s the plaster dust being released. It’s normal. The filter will clear it. Keep brushing, keep the filter running, and resist the urge to shock the pool to clear the cloudiness — the discoloration is physical plaster dust, not a chemistry problem, and shocking during the first 30 days can damage the new surface.
After the first two weeks, daily brushing can taper to once a day. After 30 days, weekly brushing is sufficient, though brushing anytime you add chemicals remains good practice throughout the first year.
The chemistry during the startup period needs to be checked and adjusted more frequently than at any other time. The curing plaster is constantly pushing pH and alkalinity upward as calcium hydroxide releases. If you’re not testing and correcting regularly, the chemistry drifts into scaling territory and the new surface pays the price.
Target ranges during the startup period according to National Plasterers Council guidelines are a pH of 7.2 to 7.6, total alkalinity of 80 to 100 ppm, and calcium hardness brought up gradually to a minimum of 200 ppm by day four and not to exceed 400 ppm. These aren’t the same as standard ongoing maintenance ranges — the startup period requires tighter management, particularly on pH, which should be tested daily and kept below 7.8 at all costs.
When the alkalinity is adjusted to 80 ppm and pH is in range, then begin adjusting calcium hardness slowly. Add cyanuric acid — stabilizer — through the skimmer starting around day four to day seven, targeting 30 to 50 ppm. Always add chemicals slowly, distributed around the pool, never dumped into one spot. Always add chemicals to water, never water to chemicals. Pre-dilute everything in a bucket of pool water before introduction.
Keep chlorine in the safe range of 1 to 3 ppm once you begin adding it after the initial 48-hour window. Do not shock the pool during the first 30 days. High doses of chlorine during curing can bleach and damage new plaster.
Test water chemistry a minimum of two to three times per week during the first month. Daily testing is better. The pH will want to climb consistently during this period — it’s not a problem you fix once, it’s something you monitor and correct throughout the curing phase.
Plaster dust causing cloudy water in the first week — normal. Minor color variations or light shadowing across the surface — normal, a result of the handcrafted nature of plaster application. Slight roughness to the touch before the surface has fully cured — normal, it smooths with time. A small amount of crazing or hairline surface marks in the very early days — normal in most cases.
Calcium scale forming as a white, rough buildup on the surface — caused by pH or alkalinity running too high, needs to be addressed immediately. Etching, pitting, or a chalky texture developing — caused by aggressive water with pH too low or alkalinity too low, attacking the plaster. Discoloration from metal stains — iron produces reddish-brown staining, copper produces blue-green — usually from the source water if sequestering agent wasn’t used at startup. Any visible delamination, blistering, or flaking of the surface — needs professional evaluation, potentially indicates an application issue.
If anything looks wrong during the startup period, contact your renovation contractor before attempting a fix. The warranty on new plaster typically depends on following the prescribed startup procedure. Deviating from it — shocking too early, letting pH run unchecked, using the wrong brush type, running automated cleaners during the first 30 days — can void the warranty and leave you responsible for damage that would otherwise be covered.
Once the 30-day startup is complete, the pool transitions to regular maintenance. The chemistry is more stable now. The plaster surface is harder and more durable. But new plaster continues curing for up to a year after installation, which means a few extra considerations apply through the first full season.
Balanced water is what protects every surface in the pool — the plaster, the tile, the grout, the equipment, the fittings. Water that’s too aggressive etches surfaces. Water that’s too scaling deposits calcium on everything. Either extreme reduces the lifespan of a renovation significantly.
The parameters to maintain on an ongoing basis are pH between 7.2 and 7.6, total alkalinity between 80 and 120 ppm, calcium hardness between 200 and 400 ppm, free chlorine between 1 and 3 ppm, and cyanuric acid between 30 and 50 ppm. Test water at least twice a week during swim season, weekly during off-season use, and make adjustments in small increments rather than large corrections. Large chemical swings are harder on the plaster surface than small, consistent corrections.
pH continues to want to climb during the first year as the plaster finishes curing. Don’t be surprised if you’re adding acid more regularly than you expect. Test daily if the pH keeps running high, and plan for it as a known behavior of new plaster rather than a problem to solve permanently.
After the 30-day startup, shift to brushing at least once a week through the first full season. New plaster is still maturing and surfaces benefit from regular brushing to prevent algae from establishing and to distribute any localized chemistry buildup. Brush before adding chemicals whenever possible — it helps distribute the treatment evenly and prevents concentrated chemicals from sitting on one spot of the surface.
The filter works harder than usual during and immediately after the startup period because of plaster dust. Check the filter pressure more frequently than you normally would in the first two weeks — when the pressure rises 20% to 25% above the clean baseline reading, the filter needs to be backwashed or cleaned. A clogged filter during startup leaves plaster dust in the water to settle and scale on the new surface.
After the startup period, standard filter maintenance applies — backwash or clean based on pressure readings and a regular schedule, rather than on a fixed calendar. Every pool generates a different amount of debris and the filter needs to be cleaned when it needs to be cleaned, not on a date that felt right three months ago.
If new equipment was installed as part of the renovation — a new pump, heater, saltwater chlorine generator, automation system, or lighting — each piece has its own break-in considerations. Follow the manufacturer’s startup instructions for each component. New saltwater chlorine generators should not be activated for the first 30 days after plaster installation. New heaters should not be run until all plaster dust is confirmed to be out of the system. Variable-speed pumps need to be programmed correctly — running them at proper speeds for the right durations affects both chemical distribution and filtration effectiveness.
Keep records of when new equipment was installed. Warranties for equipment are typically tied to installation dates and require documented maintenance. If a pump fails at 18 months and you can’t demonstrate it was maintained, the warranty claim becomes a much harder conversation.
Saltwater pools require a few specific considerations after a plaster renovation. Salt should not be added to the pool until 30 days after the plaster was installed. When adding salt, it should be pre-dissolved in a bucket before introduction or added in small amounts at the deep end and brushed in — concentrated salt sitting directly on fresh plaster can damage the surface. The salt chlorine generator should be calibrated to the actual salt level after addition, not set to maximum output and left alone.
Salt levels for most residential saltwater pools should be maintained between 2,700 and 3,400 ppm depending on the generator manufacturer’s specifications. Test salt levels monthly. Salt levels drift down over time from water dilution and are not consumed by the chlorination process — any significant drop usually indicates a leak or significant water loss that should be investigated.
The first seasonal opening after a renovation is important. Test the water before adding anything. Check equipment for any winter damage — cracked fittings, shifted o-rings, pump seal issues. Brush the entire surface and vacuum out any debris before bringing the chemistry into range. Restart chemistry adjustments gradually rather than correcting everything at once.
If the pool was winterized correctly at the end of the previous season, the opening process is straightforward. If it wasn’t properly winterized — standing water in pipes, equipment not blown out, chemistry left severely out of range over winter — the opening requires more work and potential repair before the pool can be used safely.
Proper winterization protects everything — the plaster surface, the equipment, and the plumbing. Balance the water chemistry before closing, not after. Shocked, balanced water that goes into winter with the right chemistry is far less likely to cause staining, scaling, or surface damage than water that was closed carelessly.
Blow out the plumbing lines and plug them. Lower the water level below the skimmer. Add a winter algaecide and a sequestering agent. Cover the pool with a winter safety cover that keeps debris out without pooling water that stains. Remove any equipment that can be damaged by freezing temperatures and store it properly.
The plaster in a freshly renovated pool is still curing through its first winter. Keeping it properly submerged and chemically balanced during that period — rather than drained — is important. Plaster that is allowed to dry out completely, or that goes into winter with severely unbalanced water, can develop spalling and blistering that is expensive to repair.
A well-maintained pool renovation lasts 10 to 15 years before resurfacing is needed again. A poorly maintained one can show deterioration within three to five years. The difference comes down to consistent, correct chemistry and regular physical maintenance — not complicated products or expensive interventions.
Test and adjust chemistry on a regular schedule. Brush the pool weekly. Keep the filter maintained. Address problems early when they’re small rather than waiting until they’re serious. Have the water professionally tested periodically — most pool supply stores offer free water testing and it provides a more complete chemistry picture than home test strips alone.
Annual equipment inspections before the season opens catch wear and deterioration before it becomes failure. O-rings, pump seals, filter media, and heater heat exchangers all have limited lifespans and fail in patterns that are recognizable before they become emergencies.
